How to play NYT Strands game
The New York Times Strands is a puzzle game that merges word search with pattern reasoning. Simple to play but full of challenges, here is a basic guide on how to play Strands:
1. Understand the game objectives
In each game, you will get a six-by-eight grid of letters, from which you take some related words; from those words, you would find out the "theme" of the particular game. Moreover, you have to find a "spangram" which should help you in revealing the real meaning of the theme.
2. Start Playing
Grid display: Letters fill up the grid, and you must look for some related words according to the clues given. Words can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, even changing direction.
Theme and spangram: Each puzzle has a theme representing the common points of a group of related words. There will be a spangram, normally a special word that can span all over the grid. Finding the spangrams will give you a better understanding of the theme.
3. How to find words
Direction: The words can go up, down, left, right, or diagonally. You have to take adjacent letters and try to find words to match the clues.
Flexibility: In this word search game, you are allowed to change direction, so some of the words will be in irregular patterns, adding to the difficulty.
4. Themes and spangrams
Themes: Some words you find, while you are solving, relate to a particular theme. When that is the case it is marked in blue.
Spangram: Sometimes there is one or more special word or phrase spans the entire grid which might help with core theme of puzzle. When found, it will be marked yellow.
5. Use hints
If you get stuck, use the hints to help you solve the puzzle. Hints may give away clues about the theme or spangram, which would make it easier to find the right answer. You can choose to use them or not, depending on your needs.
6. Daily updates
Strands offers new puzzles every day to keep the game fresh. Each level of puzzle has a different theme, challenging your language skills and logical reasoning.
